Week 5- Munttoren by Cooper Tate

This is the Munttoren, or "coin tower" and it is a clock tower that stands in the Muntplein Square in Amsterdam. Sorry that the quality of photo is not better. It was getting dark and I was in a hurry, but I wanted to share it anyway. This tower has stood guard since the year 1480, as it was part of the original city wall. It looks like it is standing alone in the center of the square but actually it is situated just off the square and is attached to the buildings that go off to the right of the tower. It's called Munttoren or "coin tower" because for a brief period in the 17th century this tower/guard house was used to mint coin while British and French forces lay siege to the city. Although the building is not totally original, like to imagine the people of Amsterdam keeping time with this same tower back in the day.
