While living in Wasilla, AK, one of the places we visited and toured was the historical site known as Independence Mine. It was owned by the Alaska-Pacific Consolidated Mining Company and pulled nearly 35,000 ounces of gold out of the land. Although not shown in this picture, high on the mountains were other structures built for the mining of the gold and blasting of the rock. It captivated me to think that we had such will and manpower as humans to build these structures in some of the hardest to reach places. Carrying all the material up the steep sides of the mountain could not have been an easy task. If every visiting Alaska it's definitely worth visiting this mine.
