Zac Hardina #12

The Helix bridge is located in Singapore and connects the Marina Center to Marina South. The bridge was designed by Australian based firm COX Group in cooperation with the Singaporean firm Architects 61. The bridge is 280 meters in length and was influenced by the double helix of DNA. This theme is carried through to the lighting of the bridge where paired letters C, G, A, and T can be seen representing the four bases of DNA. The bridge is constructed from two stainless steel helices that support the walk-way from below.  Small struts are placed in between the helices to maintain the curvature of the spiral. Four viewing pods are cantilevered over the supporting base and can support up to 100 people per pod. Glass tiles are hung over the walk-way to provide shade and protection from the elements for pedestrians. This bridge is an example of function being allowed to serve form and is one tourist attraction among many in the Marina Bay.
