Devon Tower is the office building for Devon Energy, an oil and natural-gas company founded in 1971 in Oklahoma City. After the growth of the company expanded to multiple buildings downtown, management looked to consolidate into one large corporate office. The team wanted to stay in Oklahoma City, so they hired architects from Pickard Chilton to build the great structure.
Towering 50 stories over the downtown, the glass-and-steel tower is the tallest building in the Oklahoma City area, and can be seen from miles around. Beginning with the generic box-like design, more geometric facets were added to make the tower more original. The tower was designed to have a curtain was structure, where the five foot glass walls are hung in five-foot modules, and attached to the stainless steel frame. On the inside, the architects created an open, cylindrical area for the main entrance, complete with a six-story-high, natural-light-flooded rotunda. This area naturally welcomes the activity of employees during their workday, and also welcomes tourists and locals just passing through. The idea behind such an open building plan and lots of windows was to carry an abundant amount of daylight into the building.
