James Curtin - Pontalba Buildings - New Orleans - Post 9

These are the two Pontalba Buildings in New Orleans' French Quarter. They form two opposite sides of Jackson Square, one up river and one down river. They were built in the 1840s by the Baroness Micaela Almonester Pontalba as investment properties. The ground floor level are shops and restaurants and the upper floors are rented apartments. Supposedly, they are the oldest continuously rented apartments in America. They are considered to be Parisian styled and with their intricate wrought iron work are what most people think of when they think of French Quarter architecture.

I lived outside of New Orleans for two years, and while there were many things I didn't like about Louisiana, I always enjoyed visiting the French Quarter.
