Williams Tower - Grant Inman

The Williams Tower in uptown Houston, Texas was completed in 1983 and designed by Philip Johnson. During the summer, I had the ability to work in this tower, which is connected to the Houston Galleria. Despite being nestled in a busy area of the city, the tower is surrounded by several parks. The parks were donated to the city by the developers of the site. From the tower, the whole surrounding Houston area can be viewed, including the downtown area approximately eight miles away.  When I first saw the Williams Tower, I was struck by how isolated it seems in this part of town. The building soars over nine-hundred feet into the air, with no other building near it coming close to its height. However, that quality is what I identify with the most about this tower: standing tall despite what may surround us. Additionally, the tower served as a pioneering feature in the development of uptown Houston, leading others to develop in the area.
