PHSC by Zac Hardina

The Physical Science Center is unique among buildings on OU's campus. The PHSC is the only building on campus with a strict brutalist architectural style. This building is indicative of the Cold War and reflects this in its large concrete sides with minimal distinctive elements. It is as if the building was designed to protect its occupants in the event of enemy occupation or rioting and looting. The buildings layout is not logical for a center of learning, with the classrooms often undersized and requiring multiple sets of stairs or elevators to access the entirety of the structure. However, when viewed as a defensible structure is becomes apparent that the original designer had more in mind than simply a place to learn. Most of the entrances are on the sub-basement with a ramp leading up to a single main entrance.

The building's style also reflects a majority of the classes offered: mathematics, physics, and engineering. My feelings towards this building are similar to the mathematics classes that I've taken in it, mild irritation with a respect for its function. I never look forward to classes located in the building; the classrooms are undersized and often have outdated equipment. Renovations to the main floor accomplished little in improving the function of the building, and instead opted for approved aesthetics. I would prefer for renovations to best done on the classrooms first and the hallways and lobby second.
