Mariam Edwar - Iraqi Shanasheel (#6)

This is not a building but an architectural feature that many buildings have and Iraq is very famous for. It is called Shanasheel. There is an entire neighborhood in the middle of Baghdad which has very old buildings and they all have Shanasheel. It is basically a balcony made out of wood that sticks out of the building just like in the picture above. It has beautiful architectural features and designs within it. Carpenters spend a lot of time working on the details of every column. This has a sentimental value to me because it reminds me of home. walking down the streets of the neighborhood gives you a feeling of how Baghdad was in the old days when it was a center for trade and education. It is an aesthetic identity for many Iraqi cities.
