Price Tower is a nineteen-story tower that can be found in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The tower was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and was constructed in the early to mid-1950s. An interesting aspect of this building is that it is one of two vertically oriented structures, and the only skyscraper by Wright. The Price Tower got its name from the H. C. Price Company, which was a local oil pipeline and chemical firm.
Since this was really the only skyscraper at the time, wright referred to The Price Tower as, "the tree that escaped the crowded forest", not only because it rises high above its surroundings, but also because of its asymmetrical design. Wright designed the price tower like a tree- supported by a strong, central foundation, and appears different from every angle.
The H.C. Price Company sold Price Tower to Phillips Petroleum in 1981, who then donated the tower to The Price Tower Arts Center in 2000. Price Tower now houses a museum of art, architecture, and design, the Inn at Price Tower, which is a member of The Historic Hotels of America, and The Copper Restaurant and Bar. It is safe to say that the arts are keeping this local gem alive for current and future generations to enjoy.
