James Curtin - Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio, Oak Park, IL. - Post 3

This is the Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio in Oak Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. I took a tour of the home in 2000, and it made me really appreciate the prairie school design, even though the older parts of the building aren't really prairie school (middle photo). The high peaked gable that dominates the west side entrance (and what would be considered the home part of the building) was built very early in Wrights career and don't quite conform with his later style. The north entrance with access to the studio is much more in keeping with prairie school design. My favorite room in the house was the dinning room (bottom photo) with it's stain glassed windows. According to the tour guide, Wright hated the design of the Victorian style home next door that can be seen though the windows, so he purposely made the windows small, placed them high up on the wall, and added stained glass elements so that light was still allowed into the room but so that you didn't really notice the building beyond.

  1. This is gorgeous! That is definitely something I could see myself living in. And who needs to see neighbors?
